Borealia http://borealiato.com/ the name of this restaurant was one of the possible names considered by the Fathers of Confederation. Its origions are Latin, meaning northern.
Where: 59 Ossington Avenue
Owners: Evelyn Wu and Chef Wayne Morris
The Food: If you’re wondering what Canadian food is, Borealia delivers. The menu draws on inspiration from the historic foods of the natives, early settlers, and subsequent immigrant groups who arrived in 18th and 19th centuries here in Canada.
The ingredients are sourced from local Ontario farms and artisans and they use only sustainable fish and seafood.
Many people before have offered their “take” on Canadian food but nothing like Borealia. Usually concepts like this come from Montreal or Vancouver but this is proudly Toronto’s!
The Drinks: Lots of beers from local micro brews, wines from here in Ontario and some fabulous wines from Europe and the rest of the world. I sat at the bar and co-owner Evelyn expertly selecting my wines (many by the glass) for each of my courses.
They also have lots of classic cocktails with the Borealia twist…splurge and order one!
The Setting: Yes, another restaurant on Ossington but why not? The restaurant isn’t big but it isn’t small either. Probably about 60 seats, you can sit at the bar for a drink or dinner and a large table at the back.
The room is cozy, decor speaking to early Canadian settlers, immigrants with murals, tapestries and wood beams and a combo of eclectic and simple lighting.
