IMG_1332Toronto’s Greektown aka The Danforth has been a street in transition and it sorely needed to have  injection of fresh, new Greek eating establishments. Enter Kritamos, located on the south side of the Danforth, between Chester and Logan. Kritamos was opened by Brian Li and he’s brought Chef Kypros Soteriou (Mandolin Aegean Bistro in Miami) to take charge of the kitchen and menu.IMG_1243

First off, regulars to the Danforth are forwarned that you will not find souvlaki, bifteki, fries or spanakopita and ice salad with Feta and Kritamos. The Danforth has plenty of that and thankfully, Kritamos is doing something different. The restaurant gets its name from a this fern like green that grows out of rocks along many shorelines in the Mediterranean. It’s bright coloured, sharp, fresh and healthy. IMG_1315

Enter Chef Kypros, originally from Cyprus with over 30 years in the kitchen, we get a menu that focuses on fish and seafood, with a slight Cypriot angle to the flavours on the plate. There also meat dishes on the menu and the owners are still waiting for customized parts to arrive for their rotisserie, where slow roasted meats will be offered.

Kritamos has a display of fresh fish and seafood, whose selection varies according to whatever is freshest at the market. Much like in Greece, you can choose the fish of your liking, have it grilled to your liking and even boned and fileted.IMG_1312

Other seafood offerings like jumbo shrimp, lobster, scallops, mussels and fresh oysters are also on the menu. You can have them grilled or prepared with one of Chef Kypros’ unique and delicious sauces that complement each respective seafood morsel.IMG_1245

One of the highlights at Kritamos is the house bread – fried bread with herbs arrive soon after you are seated at your table. You will definitely order more of this fantastic bread!IMG_1261

Chef also daily prepares a wide array of classic dips and some more creative ones that will have you coming back more than once – just to try all the dips. Besides, you get Kritamos bread again.IMG_1273

Another highlight was tasting Chef’s homemade Halloumi cheese, which arrives grilled with  salad. Sublime.IMG_1300

The Greek salad arrives tastefully plated with two generous slabs of Dodoni Feta and briny Greek olives. IMG_1288

The meatlover in your party won’t be disappointed with the lamb chops – grilled to order, buttery and flavourful. Go on…pick them up and eat with your hands.IMG_1326

End your evening with housemade baklava and be sure to ask for  glass of Commandaria, a dessert wine that comes from Cyprus. IMG_0555-001

The staff at Kritamos are young, friendly and eager to serve you. The long narrow dining room is comfortable and the seating is comfortable. The prices on the menu are very reasonable, considering what they are serving you on their menu. The Danforth was in a rut and Kritamos is a breath of fresh air for Toronto’s Greektown.IMG_1305

My wishlist for Kritamos? More Greek wines on their list, get that rotisserie working and exercise a little restraint when finishing dishes with sauces. Often less is more.
