Tapas Night at Uxbridge’s Urban Pantry

IMG_9162North-east of the city, in Durham region is the quaint old town of Uxbridge, proud to remain a traditional town that’s close to Toronto yet far away. Smack in the middle of town is Urban Pantry, a relatively new restaurant owned and operated by restaurateur and friend, Niki Pagidas.

Urban Pantry prides itself on sourcing most of its food from around Uxbridge (and Durham Region). Here, you will find local beer on tap, farm raised organic meats, fruits and vegetables like we used to find on roadside vegetable stands, fresh herbs and even fresh water fish from nearby lakes and rivers.IMG_9156

I’ve been to Urban Pantry twice and on each occasion, the menu was different. The kitchen is led by Chef Claudio Briones, who is given “carte blanche” with the menu. The result is seasonal, locally sourced food driving the menu which seems to have made Urban Pantry the darling of Uxbridge.

On my last visit, it was Tapas Night, inspired by the food memories of Chef (Spanish) and as a Greek who enjoys small plates and Meze, I can easily relate to Tapas.IMG_9157

Reservations are recommended (especially for Tapas Nights) but once you’ve covered that angle, Niki will greet you at the door, see you to your seats and you’ll be transported to Spain with live Spanish music and Tapas bites that will dance on your tongue.

The fries with Manchego cheese are a must order as is the steak with housemade Chimichurri sauce.IMG_9161

The seared scallop was a standout as was the pork belly.IMG_9180

You can’t go wrong with foie gras torchon and order up the steamed mussels and clams with Chorizo.IMG_9177

Serrano wrapped quail was succulent and beef bacon wrapped dates…to die for!IMG_9169

Below are more of the dishes we ordered. Don’t judge us…we were very hungry and each order is a sharing plate for two.

  2. Hi Peter!
So pleased you liked my post on tomato fritters…they were marvelous and we loved the deep color. Roasting tomatoes is something I’ve done frequently so knew how sweet they’d be. I love a caprese salad made with roasted tomatoes.
As for Urban Pantry, it goes on my list. The pork belly looks delicious as does the quail, which is a favorite with my family.
So nice to hear from you!
    Barbara
