I’m still enjoying the fine Spring weather we’ve been having here in the Toronto area. I’ve been sitting outdoors alot, getting some sun, tending to the herbs and working on some summer recipes.

In the garden, the prolific mint bullies some other plants and something must be done. I’ve been enjoying the Mint Julep cocktail. For such a girly-looking drink, it packs a punch: Bourbon whiskey, muddled mint and sugar and finished with lots of ice.

Sip on this cocktail slowly or risk the wrath of the Kentucky hammer!

Mint Julep

4-5 mint leaves

1 tsp. coarse brown sugar

2 1/2 oz. shot of Bourbon

enough ice to top the glass (tumbler)

mint for garnish

  1. You’ll need a tumbler or Scotch glass. Add your sugar and mint leaves and muddle into a paste. Add your Bourbon and fill with enough ice to fill-up the glass. Garnish with mint and serve. Sip and enjoy slowly, allowing the ice to dillute the Bourbon along the way.

  2. Brown sugar, eh? I have always used a sugar syrup – but this sounds like it would be delish!
If it would just stop snowing, now…. YUP – the first time in – oh 80 years?…. it is snowing out here.

  5. I almost had my first Mint Julep yesterday at a friend’s house but I went for something else instead, a Tequila sunset. I love cocktails and I’ll definitely try this. I like “girly drinks”, well, I’m a girl after all!
